The Faculty of Information and Communication Studies is pleased to announce openings for four tenure-track positions up to the rank of full Professor and eight contractual positions at the rank of Assistant Professor (renewable annually). We are excited to field applications from candidates with a background in any the following fields and disciplines:

Salary

Salaries for the position are based on the rank assigned to a successful candidate and are calculated using the the standard salary scale for UP faculty. Four of the contractual positions are set at a maximum of Assistant Professor 1 and the other four are at Assistant Professor 5. The four tenure-track positions are available up to the rank of Professor.

Successful candidates also receive all benefits to which all Philippine government employees are entitled.

About the UPOU-FICS

The UPOU-FICS has undergraduate (BA in Multimedia Studies) and graduate (Diploma in Computer Science, Master of Information Systems, Master of Development Communication, Doctor of Communication) programs with about 1,100 students and 11 full-time and 21 affiliate and adjunct faculty members. Minimum qualifications

• Applicants with only undergraduate degrees will only be eligible for the rank of Instructor. We prioritize applicants with graduate degrees, who will be eligible for a rank of Assistant Professor.
• Filipino citizenship is required for tenure-track positions.

• You must be able to work collaboratively in remote and in-person team environments.
  • You must be physically based in the Philippines or willing to relocate to the Philippines. Please note that while UPOU offers its academic programs online, all members of staff must be able to report in-person frequently in order to accomplish their responsibilities. Successful candidates must live or be willing to relocate to the NCR+ area in order to be regularly report in-person at our headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna, and/or our satellite campus in Diliman, Quezon City.
• You must be able to communicate effectively over writing with a range of internal stakeholders (particularly students, faculty, and non-teaching staff) as well as external stakeholders (such as industry and academic partners)
• Successful candidates are expected to embody the values, ethos, and mandate of the University of the Philippines as the National University

Preferred Qualifications

• Physically based in the NCR+ region
• A track record of participation in research projects and research publication
• Experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels, preferably but necessarily in online and remote settings
• A minimum of an earned Master’s degree in the fields described on this page, or substantial professional and/or research experience comparable to a Master’s degree
• We are ideally looking for applicants with prior experience in--or an interest in and willing to learn more about--any of the following fields: artificial intelligence, data science, complex systems, physical computing, hardware prototyping, wearable technology, the Internet of Things

In addition, we welcome research and industry networks and potential partners that you are would be able to bring to the position.

Responsibilities

Your primary responsibility would be teaching selected undergraduate and/or graduate courses from the FICS’ existing degree programs as well as future planned degree programs in digital art and media, computer science, and data science.

You are expected to undertake research or creative work, head research programs, and apply for research grants provided internally (by the UPOU and the University of the Philippines System) and externally. Your eligibility for promotion is based largely on your ability to publish high-quality research or produce impactful creative work.

In addition to teaching and research, UP Faculty are expected to contribute to public service and to participate in the administration of the university, including the following:

• Actively contributing to technical committees
• Learning new software systems with the goal of training other stakeholders in such systems
• Attending to system administration for UPOU systems including its learning management systems
• Participating in other committees and technical working groups as appointed by UPOU and UPOU-FICS officials

Offline and online presence

While faculty at UPOU can work off-site far more often than their counterparts in residential universities, it is expected that they should be able to report in-person at the UPOU headquarters in Los Baños and/or at our satellite office in Diliman regularly. Currently, full-time faculty report in-person on average 1-3 times a week. Those who are assigned major administrative responsibilities may find it necessary to report more often that this.
